History

Our Story

Robinson & Spensley was founded in 1933 by John Spensley and Leonard Robinson. Two local businessmen whose early partnership began with collecting and distributing eggs across the North of England. From modest beginnings in the Ribble Valley, the business quickly expanded, acquiring premises on Railway Road in Clitheroe and establishing itself as a successful enterprise through hard work, adaptability, and a strong connection to the local farming community.

During the Second World War, the business diversified to support local farmers, providing essential agricultural machinery and training. After the war, Robinson & Spensley refocused on its core operations, later expanding into new ventures including food distribution, farming, and eventually retail, even operating from the old Empire Cinema and Kirkmoor Road Bobbin Mill.

By the 1970s, the company had evolved once again, transforming its Railway Road premises into a retail frozen food business before selling to Kwiksave and reinvesting in new opportunities. The site at Upbrooks was developed into a thriving business park, still owned and managed by the company today, providing space for a number of successful local enterprises.
